Speech Therapist, PRN 

Gulf Coast Village, Cape Coral, FL



Interacts directly with residents, their families, and all levels of staff.


To provide ongoing therapy to residents in a timely manner per physician’s orders. Communicate progress within the facility of resident progress. The Speech Language Pathologist evaluates and treats patients, communicates with families, physicians and other health team members and maintains appropriate documentation of services including MDS responsibilities complying with State and Federal regulations. Participates in on-going facility meetings and conducts in-service and training for facility staff on ongoing basis in restorative and maintenance techniques.

  • Minimum of a Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology, with Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC), or the equivalent of minimum of one year experience working with adults with disorders of neurological origin, including language comprehension, expression, cognition, articulation, voice, fluency, swallowing, and hearing. The candidate must also have the ability to function independently within the department.
  • Valid license in Speech Pathology in the state (where applicable) or actively accumulating the supervisory experience required for license.
  • Registration with the Department of Health or eligible.
  • Member of Speech Language Hearing Association.
  • Auditorily and visually integrate and synthesize large amounts of information, (i.e., in-service, evaluations, and therapy tasks).
  • Excellent written and interpersonal communication.
  • Read, write, and interpret professional evaluation materials to maintain knowledge in the field, prepare in-services, administer testing and make clinical judgments.
  • Ability to independently reason and solve problems related to self, residents, and others.
  • Handle stress from caseload who may be frustrated with self or frustrating to work with.
  • Good ability to take complex direction and organize self, schedules, etc.
  • Everyday math skills.
  • Interested in geriatric rehabilitation.
  • Able to utilize computers, Servox, augmentative devices and other electronic devices for tasks such as timekeeping, in-servicing and documentation.

  • Evaluates and develops appropriate treatment plans to restore or improve communication efficiency for the residents within twenty-four (24) hours of physician referral.
  • Evaluates residents and formulates effective treatment plan per physician request and obtain approval for services from referring physician and third party payors.
  • Initiates ordered treatments and communicates with physician regarding resident’s progress.
  • Documents evaluations, weekly progress notes, discharge summaries, and other pertinent information as required by the facility’s policies, third party payers and stare and federal regulatory agencies.
  • Maintain proper documentation according to state, federal and third party payor regulations.
  • Maintain proper records according to facility policy and procedures.
  • Communicates and collaborates with team members regarding resident’s progress, problems and plans.
  • Participates in rehab conferences at regular intervals.
  • Participates in resident care planning conferences.
  • Provides resident, family, and staff with education as needed.
  • Participates in in-service training programs for staff in facility.
  • Attends required in-services & completes assigned on-line modules
  • Provides in-servicing for staff as coordinated by continuing education department.
  • Participate in the MDS process as a member of the interdisciplinary team.
  • Participate in the PPS team process monitoring minutes of therapy and understanding the PPS systems.
  • Monitors monthly department expenditures to budget.
  • Assists in ensuring speech therapy services are provided on a continuous basis without interruption. This includes finding supportive personnel if regular personnel are absent due to vacation, sickness, leave of absence or other reasons.
  • Identify and pursue professional growth by attending/participating in VOA therapy forums, seminars, and conferences.
  • Secures necessary durable medical equipment or adaptive equipment for residents to facilitate independence.
  • Supervises maintenance of equipment and supplies, and evaluates and notifies Director of Rehabilitation on a continuing basis of the condition of department’s equipment.
  • Supplies billing information each month to facility personnel.
  • Recommends to the Executive Director purchases or repairs of department equipment, initiates Executive Director-approved equipment repairs.
  • Manages department inventory control program.
  • Manages department infection control and safety programs.
  • Acts as a clinical preceptor for affiliating Speech Language Pathology clinicians during their Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) or actively accumulating the supervised experience required for certification.
  • Comply with the Speech Language Pathology Practice Act in state.
  • Performs other duties or special assignments as directed by the Director of Rehabilitation.

  • Handle physically active or disabled and uncooperative residents.
  • Move wheelchairs, lifting and carrying therapy materials up to fifty (50) pounds and perform ordinary tasks.
  • Occasional lifting from floor up to ten (10) pounds.
  • Hearing acuity and processing within normal limits (aided) to work with a variety of voice volumes.
  • Employee needs ability to move continuously; may cover large distances walking through facility and is on feet consistently.
  • Vision requirements include both near and far vision.
  • Frequently required bend, stoop, squat, twist, reach, crouch, knell, push and pull; occasionally required to climb, crawl, and balance.
  • Employee is required to frequently carry up to twenty-five (25) lbs. and to carry up to seventy-five (75) lbs; frequently required to lift up to one hundred (100) lbs, and occasionally lift up to seventy-five (75) lbs.
  • Ability to adapt to changes in daily work hours and schedule.
  • Frequent resident handling.

  • Follow guidelines for safe handling and storage of chemicals and supplies.
  • Follow correct policy and procedure for reporting of incidents: staff, residents, etc.
