Mary Marshall (Assisted Living) is looking for a Resident Service Manager to join the team in Arlington, VA!

***This is a full time, monday-friday, 10am-6pm with a 10 week rotation of Weekend Manager. Ideal Candidate will possess a Masters in Social Work***

OBJECTIVE: The primary responsibilities of the Resident Service Manager position is to organize and direct social services functions through direct service with the resident and family throughout move-in process, resident adjustment, transition and discharge services.



  • 1. Leads and directs Social Service Department.
    a. Develops a mission and direction for the department itself, participates in goal setting and direction activities with the Resident Director.
    b. Attends and participates in management committee meetings to represent department.
    2. Manages and directs activities of department in accordance with Volunteers of America National Services’ policies and procedures and guidelines.
    a. Uses Volunteers of America National Services policy manual.
    b. Uses Volunteers of America National Services forms and processes.
    c. Seeks guidance of Resident Director in policy decisions.
    3. Coordinates resident admissions.
    a. Assists with offering tours to prospective customers and admissions.
    b. Assist with in home visits with current or prospective residents, as necessary.
    c. Provide and/or arrange for meeting with all new residents. Identify and provide for the medically related social, emotional, spiritual and psychological needs; assist with resident orientation and adjustment to environment.
    d. Advises residents and families of advance directive policies.
    e. Assist with prompt referral to an appropriate agency or government program if financial assistance is indicated.
    4. Coordinates living option transitions.
    5. Completes assessments and care planning of residents as necessary.
    6. Initiate and/or participate in multidisciplinary care conferences held for residents.
    a. Serves as resident advocate – coordinates invitation of residents and families.
    b. Implements case management and support to resident as described in care plan.
    c. Maintains records as described by Volunteers of America National Services policy – maintains confidential records as necessary.
    d. Provide support services and conduct group work for residents and/or families dealing with the aging process, placement, and related problems, when appropriate.
    e. Conduct and/or arrange for casework as needed; follow through on referred problems or psychosocial needs of residents. Maintain confidential department records on all casework.
    7. Initiates reporting and documentation in the medical record.
    a. Maintains accurate and appropriate social service documentation in the medical record.
    b. Updates assessments and documentation of resident transfers within the facility and/or to an alternate setting.
    c. Prepare appropriate documentation of family conferences and other related conferences.
    d. Attend care conferences; participate in problem identification, resident goal setting and approach planning.
    e. Coordinates services and proper documentation of resident transfers within the facility and/or to an alternate setting.
    8. Serve as facility Discharge Planning Coordinator.
    a. Arranges for discharge planning meetings as necessary.
    b. Documents discharge plans.
    c. Maintains list of agencies and public service agencies that can assist residents, families with their discharge plans.
    9. And adhere to any other duties under the guidelines of this position based on job description.

Job Requirements


  • 1. Must have Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work or related degree in social sciences; licensed where applicable by the state; state requirements may dictate supervision and degree type.
    2. Minimum of one year of social work experience, preferably in a long-term healthcare setting; knowledge of long-term healthcare and public health settings; familiarity with Federal and State regulations and requirements for long-term care.
    3. Ability to read, speak and write fluently in English; excellent communication and phone skills; ability to prepare written assessments and correspondence; ability to read and interpret rules and regulations.
    4. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals; ability to comprehend and carry out simple statistical functions to create standard graphs and tables.
    5. Ability and willingness to work flexible hours, such as during evenings and weekends, for planned activities and special events, family meetings and conferences, and as necessary.
    6. Negotiation skills and ability to carry on several levels of reasoning at once during problem solving sessions; ability to think quickly and to write contracts and complex written arguments.
    7. Ability to work with residents of varying levels of responsiveness.
    8. Familiarity with word processing, data processing and computer entry skills to match existing clinical management software at facility.
    9. Ability to perform several job functions at once.
    10. Numerical ability necessary to make various computations in planning departmental objectives, keeping work records and schedules, preparing budgets, requisitioning supplies, and monitoring inventory control.
    11. Ability to apply principles of personnel administration to interviewing, selection and supervision of employees, and in monitoring department activities.
