The Naval Nuclear Laboratory comprises the U.S. Department of Energy locations and personnel responsible for developing advanced naval nuclear propulsion technology, providing technical support to ensure the safety and reliability of our nation’s naval nuclear reactors, and training the Sailors who operate those reactors in the U.S. Navy’s submarines and aircraft carrier Fleets. The Carrier Fluid Systems Engineer is responsible for the propulsion plant mechanical systems of NIMITZ class aircraft carriers, providing expert technical support to the United States Navy. In this position, engineering and project management principles are applied to ensure cost effective and timely delivery of engineering products for operation, overhaul, troubleshooting, and modernization of US Navy aircraft carrier propulsion plant fluid and mechanical systems. This requires interfacing with other engineering organizations to resolve problems and support design, analysis, testing, and inspection initiatives. Here you'll work in a team environment with multiple engineering disciplines across various organizations within and outside of NNL, ensuring the continued operation of systems and components integral to the safe and reliable operation of US Navy nuclear ships. Typical responsibilities include becoming a subject matter expert on design, operation, and maintenance for assigned systems and applying engineering expertise to solve emergent issues, support carrier availability work, and perform evaluations with assigned systems. You'll develop procedures to be used by Navy personnel to safely operate aircraft carrier reactor plants, written evaluations of systems and component health, and technical proposals for the modernization of components. This position requires maintaining the highest level of quality in development of technical recommendations and assessments, often requiring integration across multiple engineering disciplines. Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill BS degree in engineering or Bachelor's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of nine years of relevant experience or;MS degree in engineering or Master's degree in a science related field from an accredited college or university and a minimum of seven years of relevant experience or;Currently or previously Shift Supervisor Part II qualified or qualified SIT and three years as EOOW in the Nuclear Operations Program or Current or previous CRE Qualification, or six years as SRE, or SRE qualified with nine years of experience Preferred Skills Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are essential to contribute effectively. Demonstrated leadership and problem-solving skills. Commercial or naval nuclear plant design or operation experience.
